Victory Brigades (Syrian rebel group)

The Victory Brigades (Arabic: كتائب النصر, Kata'ib al-Nasr) was a Syrian rebel group that operated primarily in the Idlib Governorate and surrounding areas during the Syrian Civil War. The group was formed in 2012 and participated in numerous battles against Syrian government forces and affiliated militias.

The Victory Brigades' stated goals included the overthrow of the Syrian government led by Bashar al-Assad and the establishment of a more democratic and just society. They were initially affiliated with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and received some external support, primarily from Gulf states and Turkey.

The group's composition was largely made up of Syrian Sunni Muslims, and its ideology was generally considered to be moderate Islamist or Syrian nationalist. The Victory Brigades participated in various offensives and defensive operations, often coordinating with other rebel groups operating in the same areas.

Over the course of the Syrian Civil War, the Victory Brigades' influence and territorial control fluctuated. Like many other rebel groups, they faced challenges including internal divisions, resource limitations, and the rise of more radical groups like Jabhat al-Nusra (later Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The Victory Brigades eventually suffered significant battlefield losses and fragmentation. By the late 2010s, their presence and operational capacity had diminished significantly, with many fighters either joining other groups or leaving the battlefield altogether. Information regarding their current status is limited, but they are generally considered to be defunct or significantly weakened.
