Samuel Shore (banker)

Samuel Shore (1738-1828) was an English banker and Unitarian benefactor. He was a member of the Sheffield banking family, Shore & Mellin (later Shore, Birch, & Spencer).

Born in Sheffield, he was the son of Samuel Shore (1714-1785), also a banker, and Abigail Jebb, sister of John Jebb. His father was a partner in the same banking firm.

Samuel Shore was known for his involvement in progressive causes and Unitarianism. He supported the New Meeting House in Sheffield and contributed significantly to the establishment of the Upper Chapel, a prominent Unitarian church in the city. He was a close friend and supporter of various radical thinkers and dissenters, including Thomas Paine.

Shore's banking career provided him with considerable wealth, which he used to support philanthropic endeavors and political reform movements. He was a vocal advocate for social justice and educational opportunities. He was also active in promoting local industries in Sheffield.

He married Urith Smith in 1771 and they had several children, including Samuel Shore (1776-1836), who also became a prominent figure in Sheffield society and continued the family's banking tradition.

Samuel Shore died in Sheffield in 1828. His legacy remains significant as a figure who combined business acumen with a commitment to social and religious reform during a period of significant change in England. He is remembered for his contributions to the growth of Sheffield and his dedication to Unitarianism and progressive causes.
