Eastern Gate (Delft)

The Eastern Gate (Oostpoort in Dutch) is the only remaining city gate of Delft, Netherlands. Originally constructed around 1400, it served as a vital entry point into the city from the east, controlling access and facilitating trade along the important waterways connected to Delft.

The Oostpoort is characterized by its twin towers and arched gateway, built in a late Gothic style. It was originally part of Delft's extensive defensive walls and moat system. Over the centuries, the gate has undergone several renovations and modifications, reflecting changing architectural styles and functional needs.

While initially serving a primarily defensive purpose, the Oostpoort later accommodated residential dwellings within its towers. Today, the gate stands as a significant historical landmark and a symbol of Delft's rich past. It is a popular tourist attraction and a reminder of the city's medieval fortifications. Its strategic location along the Schie River contributed significantly to Delft's economic prosperity and defense throughout its history. The Oostpoort is officially designated as a Rijksmonument (national monument) in the Netherlands.
