Trilby (1923 film)

Trilby is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by James Young, based on the 1894 novel Trilby by George du Maurier. The film stars Marian Marsh as Trilby O'Ferrall and Arthur Edmund Carewe as Svengali.

The film tells the story of Trilby O'Ferrall, a poor artist's model in Paris, who falls under the hypnotic spell of the sinister musician Svengali. Svengali transforms Trilby into a famous opera singer through his hypnotic powers, exploiting her talents and controlling her every move. Trilby, unaware of Svengali's manipulation, achieves great success but remains emotionally hollow. When Svengali dies, his power over Trilby is broken, and she loses her singing ability and ultimately her life.

The 1923 adaptation is one of several film versions of du Maurier's novel. While not as critically acclaimed as some other adaptations, it remains a notable example of silent film melodrama. It is known for its expressionistic sets and Arthur Edmund Carewe's performance as Svengali, which helped solidify the character's image as a sinister and controlling figure.
