Samshvilde (village)
Samshvilde is a village located in Georgia, within the Tetritsqaro Municipality of the Kvemo Kartli region. It is situated near the confluence of the Khrami and Chivchavi rivers. The village is historically significant due to its proximity to, and association with, the ruins of the ancient city of Samshvilde, one of the oldest and most important settlements in the historical region of Lower Kartli.
The village's current population is significantly smaller than that of the once-thriving city it neighbours. While the city of Samshvilde is largely uninhabited ruins, the modern village supports a small community, primarily engaged in agriculture and livestock farming.
The primary attraction for visitors to Samshvilde is the access it provides to the archaeological site. The ruins offer insights into Georgian history, architecture, and the development of urban centers in the region over centuries. The site includes remnants of fortifications, churches (including the prominent Samshvilde Sioni Church), and residential structures.
