Salamat (prefecture)
Salamat is a prefecture in the Chad region of Central Africa. It is one of the 23 prefectures (or regions) of Chad, established in 2002, replacing the former departments. Its capital is Am Timan.
The prefecture is located in the south-eastern part of Chad and shares borders with Sudan to the east. The terrain is largely characterized by savanna and floodplains. The rainy season, from approximately May to October, brings substantial flooding to the area.
The population of Salamat is primarily engaged in agriculture and livestock herding. Key crops include millet, sorghum, and groundnuts. Animal husbandry plays a vital role in the local economy, with cattle, goats, and sheep being raised.
Salamat faces various challenges, including poverty, limited access to healthcare and education, and environmental concerns like desertification and water scarcity. Infrastructure development is also a significant priority.
The prefecture is divided into three departments: Aboudeïa, Barh Azoum, and Haraze Al Biar. These departments are further subdivided into sub-prefectures.
