A1 motorway (North Macedonia)
The A1 motorway in North Macedonia is the country's longest and most important motorway, forming a key part of the Pan-European Corridor X. It connects the capital city of Skopje with major cities and border crossings to the north and south.
The motorway runs from the Tabanovce border crossing with Serbia, near Kumanovo, southwards through Skopje, Veles, and Negotino, continuing towards Demir Kapija, and eventually reaching the border crossing with Greece near Gevgelija.
The A1 is a dual carriageway, typically with two or three lanes in each direction, depending on the section. It is a toll road, with tolls collected at various points along its length. The motorway has significantly improved travel times and connectivity within North Macedonia and between neighboring countries. Its construction and maintenance are vital to the country's economy and its integration into regional and European transport networks. Ongoing improvements and expansions are periodically undertaken to enhance safety and capacity.
