SS Sulina

The SS Sulina was a British cargo steamship built in 1908 by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd, Wallsend-on-Tyne, England. She was owned by Turnbull, Scott & Co. Ltd, London. The Sulina was primarily employed in the coal trade.

During World War I, the SS Sulina was requisitioned by the British Admiralty and served as a collier, transporting coal to support the war effort.

On November 22, 1917, the SS Sulina was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-boat U-53 off the coast of Ireland, approximately 8 miles south-southwest of the Daunt Rock lightship. All 35 crew members perished.

The wreck of the SS Sulina is designated as a war grave and is a protected site under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.
