SM UB-5

SM UB-5 was a German Type UB II submarine, also known as a U-boat, in the German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. She was commissioned on January 27, 1915.

UB-5 patrolled the North Sea and English Channel, conducting operations primarily against merchant shipping. She sank a number of ships during her service. Notable among her victims were various fishing vessels and cargo ships supplying the Allied war effort.

She was sunk on November 3, 1916, after striking a mine in the Dover Strait. The wreck remains a designated war grave. All 29 of her crew members perished in the sinking. Her commander at the time was Oberleutnant zur See Horst Obermüller.
