Joseph O'Connell (bishop)
Joseph O'Connell (1872-1959) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the third Bishop of Richmond from 1926 to 1958.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, O'Connell received his education at Boston College and the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1897.
Following his ordination, O'Connell served in various pastoral and administrative roles within the Archdiocese of Boston. He held positions such as curate, pastor, and diocesan official.
In 1924, O'Connell was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Boston and Titular Bishop of Pinara. He was consecrated as bishop later that year.
On January 5, 1926, he was appointed Bishop of Richmond, succeeding Denis J. O'Connell (no relation). During his episcopate, O'Connell oversaw the growth of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Richmond. He established new parishes, schools, and other institutions to serve the growing Catholic population. He also actively promoted Catholic education and social services.
Bishop O'Connell retired in 1958 and was succeeded by John J. Russell. He died the following year. He is remembered for his dedication to the Church and his contributions to the development of the Diocese of Richmond.
