Rota (volcano)

Rota is a potentially active submarine volcano located in the Mariana Arc, approximately 73 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Guam and 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of the island of Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands.

While the exact depth of the volcano's summit is variable and subject to change due to ongoing volcanic activity, it generally lies several hundred meters below sea level. The volcano is characterized by hydrothermal venting and episodic phreatic eruptions (steam explosions caused by the interaction of magma and water). These eruptions can produce plumes of discolored water and pumice rafts.

Rota volcano poses a potential hazard to shipping and aircraft in the region, primarily due to the possibility of sudden, explosive eruptions and the formation of floating pumice rafts. Continuous monitoring by observatories like the USGS and the VAAC is crucial to detect changes in activity and provide timely warnings.

The volcano's remote location and submarine nature make detailed study challenging. However, ongoing research aims to better understand its eruptive history, magma composition, and potential future activity.
