Rosemont (horse)
Rosemont was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 1916 Kentucky Derby. He was bred and owned by John E. Madden's Hamburg Place Stud near Lexington, Kentucky. Rosemont was sired by Voter and his dam was Irismere by Broomstick.
Rosemont was trained by Matthew P. Brady. In the 1916 Kentucky Derby, Rosemont was ridden by jockey John Loftus. The victory was Loftus' third consecutive Kentucky Derby win, a feat matched only by Earl Sande.
Rosemont's Derby victory was considered somewhat of an upset, as he was not among the favorites. He defeated a field that included the highly regarded colt, Campfire. Following his Derby win, Rosemont continued to race, although he did not achieve the same level of success. His racing career was relatively short.
The horse's legacy primarily rests on his Kentucky Derby win. He is remembered as a representative of a bygone era in American horse racing. While not considered one of the all-time greats, Rosemont remains a noteworthy part of Kentucky Derby history. His name occasionally appears in discussions of significant upset victories in the race.
