Rose Island (amusement park)

Rose Island was an amusement park located on an island in the Ohio River near Charlestown, Indiana. Originally known as Fern Grove, it was renamed Rose Island in 1923 by its owner, David Rose, who sought to create a lavish resort destination.

The park featured a swimming pool, dance hall, a scenic railway called the "Lightning Express," a hotel, a zoo, and various other attractions typical of amusement parks of the early 20th century. It became a popular getaway, particularly during the steamboat era, drawing crowds from Louisville and Cincinnati.

However, Rose Island’s fortunes declined due to a combination of factors. The Great Depression significantly reduced disposable income for leisure activities. Further compounding the problem, the devastating Ohio River flood of 1937 caused extensive damage to the park's infrastructure. Many of the buildings were submerged and rendered unusable.

Following the flood, Rose Island was abandoned and never reopened. Over time, the natural environment reclaimed the island, leaving behind remnants of the park's structures, which can still be found today.

Currently, Rose Island is part of Charlestown State Park. Visitors can hike to the island, accessible via a trail, and explore the ruins of the once-thriving amusement park, providing a glimpse into a bygone era of riverboat tourism and entertainment. The remnants of the swimming pool, the foundation of the dance hall, and sections of the railway are among the visible artifacts.
