Robert Willis (sailor)
Robert Willis was a British sailor who served as master's mate aboard HMS Bounty during its voyage to Tahiti in 1787-1789 under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh. Willis was one of the loyalists who remained with Bligh following the infamous mutiny led by Fletcher Christian.
He endured the arduous open-boat journey with Bligh and the other loyal crew members from Tofua to Timor, navigating thousands of miles with limited supplies. Willis survived the journey and later testified at the court-martial of the mutineers who were captured. Historical records indicate he provided valuable evidence regarding the events leading up to and during the mutiny. After the Bounty affair, further information on Willis's life and naval career remains sparse in available historical sources. His contribution is primarily remembered for his loyalty to Bligh and his role in the aftermath of the mutiny on the Bounty.
