Robert Ross (botanist)

Robert Ross (1912 – 2005) was a British botanist, specializing in the study of diatoms. He was a prominent figure at the British Museum (Natural History), now the Natural History Museum, London, for much of his career.

Ross's primary research interest was the taxonomy and morphology of diatoms, a group of single-celled algae with intricate silica cell walls. He made significant contributions to the understanding of diatom classification and evolution, publishing extensively on both fossil and extant species. His work included revisions of numerous diatom genera and descriptions of many new species.

Throughout his career, Ross contributed significantly to the nomenclature of diatoms. He was involved in the development and application of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (now the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants), ensuring taxonomic stability and clear communication within the scientific community.

Ross's work is considered fundamental to diatom research, and his publications remain important references for scientists studying these organisms. His expertise and dedication to diatom taxonomy have significantly advanced our knowledge of diatom biodiversity and evolution.
