Rim Banna
Rim Banna (Arabic: ريم بنا) (December 8, 1966 – March 24, 2018) was a Palestinian singer, composer, arranger, and activist, known for her modern interpretations of traditional Palestinian folk music and poetry. Banna's work often focused on themes of Palestinian identity, resistance, and social justice.
Born in Nazareth, Israel, she studied music at the Higher Musical Conservatory in Moscow, specializing in classical singing and conducting. Returning to Palestine, she began her career focusing on preserving and revitalizing Palestinian cultural heritage through music. She collaborated with various artists and musicians internationally.
Banna's music repertoire included traditional Palestinian children's songs, lullabies, and folk tunes, re-arranged with contemporary musical elements. She also set to music the poetry of prominent Palestinian poets, such as Mahmoud Darwish and Tawfiq Ziad, as well as writing her own original lyrics.
Throughout her career, Rim Banna released numerous albums, gaining recognition both in the Arab world and internationally. Her music served as a cultural bridge, introducing Palestinian heritage and experiences to a wider audience. She was also known for her activism, using her platform to raise awareness about the Palestinian struggle.
Banna battled breast cancer for several years, continuing to perform and create music despite her illness. She passed away in 2018, leaving behind a significant legacy in Palestinian music and culture. Her contributions continue to influence musicians and artists working to preserve and promote Palestinian heritage.
