Requiem (Dvořák)
The Requiem in B-flat minor, Op. 89, B. 166, is a large-scale sacred composition for soloists, choir, and orchestra by Antonín Dvořák. It was composed in 1890 and premiered in Birmingham, England, on October 9, 1891, conducted by the composer.
Commissioned by the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival, the Requiem is a setting of the traditional Latin Requiem Mass text. Dvořák approached the text with a deeply personal and spiritual perspective, moving beyond simply setting the words to expressing a profound meditation on life, death, and faith.
The work is divided into thirteen movements:
