Presocratics (band)
The Presocratics were an instrumental post-rock band formed in the late 1990s and based in the Washington, D.C. area. They are known for their atmospheric soundscapes, often incorporating elements of ambient, electronic, and progressive rock. The band's name is a reference to the pre-Socratic philosophers of ancient Greece, reflecting a perceived connection between their music and broader philosophical themes.
The band's core members consisted of James Plotkin, Melissa Kaplan, and Justin Broadrick, although the lineup sometimes included other contributors. James Plotkin is a notable figure in the experimental and industrial music scenes, known for his work with bands such as OLD, Khanate, and Scorn. Justin Broadrick is best known for his pioneering work in industrial metal with Godflesh and Jesu. Melissa Kaplan has also contributed to various musical projects.
Presocratics released a limited number of albums and EPs, primarily through independent labels. Their music is characterized by its slow-building compositions, layered instrumentation, and the absence of vocals. They have been cited as an influence by other post-rock artists and are considered a significant, though perhaps somewhat obscure, act within the genre. Their recordings are often sought after by collectors due to their limited availability and cult following. Their work generally eschews conventional song structures in favor of more expansive and immersive sound explorations.
