Rebus (2000 TV series)

Rebus is a Scottish television crime drama series based on the Inspector Rebus novels by Ian Rankin. Produced by Clerkenwell Films and STV Productions, it aired for four series between 2000 and 2007.

The first series (2000-2001) starred John Hannah as Detective Inspector John Rebus. Following the second series, Hannah left the role, and Ken Stott took over for the third and fourth series (2006-2007). Each series comprised multiple self-contained episodes, typically two-part stories, adapting specific Rebus novels or featuring original storylines developed in the spirit of Rankin's work.

The series is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, and focuses on Rebus's investigations into complex and often morally ambiguous crimes. Recurring characters included Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke, Rebus's young and ambitious colleague, and Gill Templer, a forensic pathologist and sometimes romantic interest.

Differences between the Hannah and Stott portrayals of Rebus were noted, with Hannah's depiction often seen as more volatile and troubled, while Stott's portrayal was perceived as more world-weary and contemplative. Despite the change in leading actor, the series maintained a focus on the atmospheric portrayal of Edinburgh and the morally complex nature of crime and policing. The show was generally well-received for its gritty realism and compelling storylines.
