Alexander Brown (banker)

Alexander Brown (1764 – 1834) was an Irish-American merchant and banker who founded the merchant banking firm of Alexander Brown & Sons, now Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. Born in Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland, he emigrated to the United States in 1783 and established a linen business in Baltimore, Maryland.

Recognizing the potential of international trade, Brown gradually shifted his focus to financing trade between the United States and Europe, particularly Great Britain and Ireland. He was instrumental in developing innovative financial instruments to facilitate these transactions, including bills of exchange and letters of credit.

By the early 19th century, Alexander Brown & Sons had become a leading financial institution, playing a significant role in the growth of American commerce and industry. He brought his sons, William, John, James, and George into the business, each of whom established branches in Liverpool, Philadelphia, New York City, and Baltimore, respectively. This network of offices allowed the firm to efficiently manage international transactions and build strong relationships with clients on both sides of the Atlantic.

Alexander Brown's success was built on a reputation for integrity, prudence, and a deep understanding of international markets. He is considered one of the pioneers of American merchant banking and his firm has played a vital role in the development of the U.S. economy for over two centuries.
