Reboot (novel)
Reboot is a young adult dystopian science fiction novel written by Amy Tintera, published in 2013. The story is set in a near-future world where some deceased individuals can be "rebooted" – brought back to life by the Retinal-Activation Injection (RAI) within a government facility. These Reboots possess superhuman strength, speed, and resilience but also experience a gradual decline in emotions and empathy as their "days since death" increase.
The novel primarily follows Wren, a 178 Reboot (meaning she has been dead and revived for 178 days), and Callum, a recently created 22 Reboot. Wren is one of the most formidable Reboots in the Republic of Texas' HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation) facility, known for her obedience and fighting prowess. Callum, still retaining a significant amount of his humanity, struggles to adapt to the harsh realities of Reboot life.
The plot centers on Wren and Callum's growing relationship as they uncover a conspiracy within HARC and question the organization's true motives. They ultimately decide to escape the facility and fight against the oppressive government to help other Reboots reclaim their freedom and humanity.
The novel explores themes of humanity versus technology, government control, free will, and the meaning of life and death. It is the first book in a series, followed by Rebel and Ruined.
