Queen of the South (TV series)
Queen of the South is an American crime drama television series developed by M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller. It premiered on USA Network on June 23, 2016, and concluded on June 9, 2021, after five seasons.
The series is an adaptation of the Spanish-language telenovela La Reina del Sur, which in turn is based on the novel of the same name by Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
Queen of the South tells the story of Teresa Mendoza, a poor Mexican woman who becomes wealthy by building a vast drug empire. After her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico, Teresa is forced to flee and seek refuge in America. Over time, she learns the ropes and strategically allies herself with questionable figures to dismantle the drug trafficking network that hunted her down. As Teresa builds her own powerful empire, she faces betrayals, shifting alliances, and constant threats to her life and her loved ones.
The series stars Alice Braga as Teresa Mendoza. Other notable cast members include Verónica Falcón, Peter Gadiot, Hemky Madera, and Jon-Michael Ecker.
The show has received generally positive reviews, with praise for Braga's performance and the show's fast-paced plot and suspenseful atmosphere. However, some critics have noted similarities to other crime dramas and its reliance on familiar tropes.
