Putyata
Putyata was a posadnik (mayor) of Kyiv, a prominent figure in the late 11th century. He is best known for his role during the Kyiv Uprising of 1068, which occurred after the defeat of the Rus' princes by the Polovtsy at the Battle of the Alta.
Putyata, along with other notable Kyivans, played a key role in deposing Grand Prince Izyaslav Yaroslavich. The uprising was fueled by popular discontent over Izyaslav's perceived failure to protect the city from the Polovtsy raids and his reluctance to arm the citizenry. The Kyivans, demanding arms and a leader to fight the Polovtsy, ultimately installed Vseslav Bryachislavich of Polotsk as the new Grand Prince.
Putyata's actions during this period are significant because they demonstrate the power of the Kyiv veche (city assembly) and its ability to influence political events in the Kievan Rus'. His involvement highlights the tensions between the ruling princes and the urban population, particularly during times of crisis. While details about Putyata's life beyond this event are scarce, his name remains associated with a pivotal moment in Kyiv's history and the complex dynamics of power in the Kievan Rus'.
