Panchagni

Panchagni refers to a specific and rigorous penance performed in Hinduism. The term translates literally to "five fires" (Pancha - five, Agni - fire). It is a tapasya (austerity) undertaken to purify the body and mind, often with the goal of spiritual advancement or fulfillment of a vow.

The penance involves sitting in the middle of four fires lit around the individual, with the sun acting as the fifth fire above. Typically, the fires are fueled by cow dung cakes or wood, and the individual must remain seated in this extremely hot and uncomfortable environment for a prescribed duration, often during the hottest part of the day.

The practice is highly demanding and requires significant physical and mental endurance. It is usually performed under the guidance of a Guru (spiritual teacher) who monitors the individual's progress and ensures their safety.

The Panchagni penance is not commonly practiced in modern times due to its inherent difficulty and the potential health risks involved. It is considered a rare and exceptional display of devotion and commitment. The specific rituals and mantras recited during the performance may vary depending on the tradition and the Guru's instructions.
