Port Arthur (federal electoral district)

Port Arthur was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that existed from 1904 to 1968.

History and Boundaries:

The electoral district was created in 1903 from parts of Algoma and Thunder Bay and Rainy River ridings. Its boundaries generally encompassed the city of Port Arthur (now part of Thunder Bay) and surrounding areas in Northwestern Ontario. Throughout its existence, the boundaries shifted slightly to reflect population changes and redistricting efforts.

Representation:

Port Arthur consistently elected one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons.

Political Landscape:

The riding saw representation from various political parties over the years, reflecting the diverse political views within the region. Notably, the Liberal Party held the seat for a significant portion of its history. Labour representation was also notable, reflecting the strong presence of industry and resource extraction in the area.

Abolition:

The Port Arthur electoral district was abolished in 1966 when it was merged into the ridings of Fort William and Thunder Bay. Consequently, the riding ceased to exist following the 1968 federal election. The name "Port Arthur" disappeared from the federal electoral map at this time.
