Porcarius

A porcarius (plural: porcarii) was a swineherd or pig keeper in Roman and medieval times. The term derives from the Latin word porcus, meaning pig or swine. The porcarius held the responsibility of tending to and managing herds of pigs, often on behalf of a landowner or as a service rendered within a village community. Their duties included feeding, watering, protecting the pigs from predators and disease, and moving them to suitable grazing areas. In the social hierarchy, porcarii typically occupied a humble position, but their role was crucial in providing a source of meat and other resources (like lard) for the population. The position is frequently referenced in historical texts, particularly those detailing agricultural practices and rural life during those periods. The term and profession are related to similar positions dealing with other animals, like bubulcus for oxen or caprarius for goats.
