Pohnpei
Pohnpei is an island of the Senyavin Islands, part of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It is the largest, most populous, and highest island in the FSM. Kolonia is the capital of Pohnpei State and Palikir, located near Kolonia, is the national capital of the Federated States of Micronesia.
Geography: Pohnpei is a volcanic island characterized by lush rainforests, waterfalls, and mangrove swamps. Its highest point is Mount Nahna Laud, which reaches approximately 782 meters (2,566 feet) above sea level. The island's central highlands contribute to its heavy rainfall, resulting in abundant streams and rivers. Pohnpei is surrounded by a fringing coral reef.
People and Culture: The indigenous inhabitants of Pohnpei are Micronesian, and the Pohnpeian language is spoken widely. The island boasts a rich cultural heritage, with traditional practices and social structures still prevalent. Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of bananas, breadfruit, coconuts, and kava, plays a significant role in the island's economy and culture. History: Pohnpei's history includes periods of pre-colonial independence, followed by Spanish, German, and Japanese administration. After World War II, Pohnpei became part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, administered by the United States. In 1986, the Federated States of Micronesia gained independence, with Pohnpei as one of its four constituent states.
Economy: The economy of Pohnpei is largely based on subsistence agriculture and fishing. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction. Other notable landmarks include Kepirohi Waterfall and Liduduhniap Falls.
