Pen Dinas

Pen Dinas is the name of two distinct Iron Age hillforts in Wales:

1. Pen Dinas Hillfort (Aberystwyth): Located near Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, this Pen Dinas (also sometimes referred to as Dinas Hill) is a prominent landmark overlooking the town and Cardigan Bay. It is a large and well-preserved hillfort, featuring multiple ramparts and ditches, suggesting a complex defensive structure. Archaeological evidence indicates occupation from the Iron Age and potentially earlier. The site offers panoramic views and is a popular destination for walkers. The hillfort is considered a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

2. Pen Dinas Hillfort (Llandudno): Situated above Llandudno, Conwy, this Pen Dinas (also known as the Great Orme's Head) is another significant hillfort. It commands strategic views of the surrounding coastline and countryside. Though less visibly imposing than the Aberystwyth Pen Dinas, it still represents an important Iron Age settlement and defensive site. Remains of hut circles and other features can be found within the earthworks. Like the Aberystwyth hillfort, this Pen Dinas is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

It is important to specify which Pen Dinas is being referenced, as both are notable archaeological sites with the same name located in different parts of Wales. The name "Pen Dinas" is a common Welsh place name element, translating roughly to "Head Hillfort" or "Hillfort Head," referring to a fortified hilltop.
