4th Division (Norway)
The 4th Division (Norwegian: 4. divisjon) was a former major military formation of the Norwegian Army. It was a field army division that existed at various times throughout the 20th century and into the early 21st century. Its primary responsibility was the defense of Northern Norway, specifically against potential threats from the Soviet Union and, later, Russia.
The division's structure and composition varied over time, but it typically included infantry brigades, artillery regiments, engineer battalions, and logistics units. It played a crucial role in Norway's Cold War defense strategy, participating in exercises and maintaining a state of readiness to respond to any aggression.
The 4th Division was headquartered in North Norway, and its subordinate units were stationed throughout the region. It was eventually disbanded as part of broader reforms and restructuring within the Norwegian Armed Forces, which saw a shift towards smaller, more rapidly deployable units. Some of its units were reassigned to other formations or deactivated altogether.
