Pasham

Pasham, also spelled Pashaam, (Hindi: पश्म) refers to a type of high-quality, lightweight wool primarily sourced from the undercoat of Himalayan goats, particularly the Changthangi goat found in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India. The term is often used interchangeably with "pashmina," though distinctions exist based on fiber diameter and processing.

Traditionally, Pasham wool is hand-spun and hand-woven, resulting in delicate and luxurious shawls, scarves, and other textiles. The softness and warmth of Pasham products are highly valued.

The Pasham industry plays a significant role in the economy of Ladakh. However, concerns exist regarding sustainable harvesting practices and the welfare of the goats, as well as the potential for mislabeling and the sale of inferior-quality wool products as Pasham. Certifications and initiatives aim to ensure the authenticity and ethical sourcing of Pasham.

Pasham differs from regular wool in its finer fiber diameter (typically less than 16 microns), contributing to its softness and lightweight feel. While both Pasham and cashmere originate from goats, Pasham is considered a specific regional variety, often possessing unique characteristics due to the environment in which the goats are raised.
