Isaac Singleton (priest)

Isaac Singleton (born November 2, 1789, died December 16, 1852) was an American Presbyterian minister prominent in North Carolina during the first half of the 19th century. He was a significant figure in the development of Presbyterianism in the western part of the state, particularly in the area around Fayetteville and Wilmington.

Singleton was born in South Carolina and received his early education in local schools. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1812, and subsequently studied theology. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Harmony in 1814 and ordained in 1816.

His ministry was characterized by its evangelistic zeal and its emphasis on Christian education. He served as pastor of various churches, including the Centre Presbyterian Church in Iredell County, North Carolina, and the Wilmington Presbyterian Church. Singleton was also actively involved in the establishment of schools and academies throughout the region. He played a key role in the founding of Davidson College, advocating for its establishment and serving on its board of trustees. He was known for his strong preaching style and his dedication to serving the spiritual needs of his community. His work contributed significantly to the growth and stability of Presbyterian churches in North Carolina during a period of significant social and religious change. Singleton's sermons and writings reflect a conservative theological perspective within the Presbyterian tradition. He is buried in the Wilmington Presbyterian Church cemetery.
