Parthenopolis (Chalcidice)

Parthenopolis was an ancient Greek city located in the Chalcidice peninsula, in Macedonia. Its precise location is uncertain, but it is believed to have been situated inland, away from the coast. Little is known about the history of Parthenopolis, and it is mainly mentioned in ancient sources in connection with other cities of the region. Its name, meaning "Maiden City" or "City of the Virgin," suggests a possible connection to the worship of a virgin goddess, such as Athena or Artemis, although archaeological evidence to support this is lacking. The city likely belonged to the Chalcidian League before its dissolution by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC. Its subsequent history under Macedonian and Roman rule is largely undocumented. Archaeological remains that can be definitively attributed to Parthenopolis are scarce, making reconstruction of its history and importance difficult.
