John Tyrrell (musicologist)

John Tyrrell (born 17 August 1942, Pretoria, South Africa; died 4 October 2018, Cardiff, Wales) was a prominent musicologist specializing in Czech music, particularly the works of Leoš Janáček.

Tyrrell received his early musical education in South Africa and later studied at Oxford University. He dedicated much of his career to researching and promoting the music of Janáček, becoming a leading authority on the composer's life and works.

His extensive research led to the publication of several significant books, including the two-volume biography Janáček: Years of a Life (1992, 2006), which is considered the definitive biography of the composer. Other notable publications include Leoš Janáček: Káťa Kabanová (Cambridge Opera Handbooks, 1982), and Czech Opera (1988). He also edited numerous volumes of Janáček's correspondence and writings.

Tyrrell held academic positions at the University of Nottingham and Cardiff University, where he played a significant role in shaping the field of Czech music studies. He was known for his meticulous scholarship, insightful analysis, and dedication to making Janáček's music accessible to a wider audience.
