Papakht

A papakht (also spelled papakha, from Russian: папа́ха) is a high, usually wool hat worn by men throughout the Caucasus, Central Asia and Russia. The word is of Turkic origin, likely from the word "papak," meaning hat.

Papakhts are a significant part of traditional male attire in these regions and are often associated with bravery, dignity, and status. They come in various shapes, sizes, and materials depending on the region and the ethnicity of the wearer. Common materials include sheepskin (karakul being particularly prized), astrakhan fur, and felt.

The style of the papakht can vary greatly. Some are tall and cylindrical, while others are more conical or even slightly drooping. Certain styles are specifically associated with particular ethnic groups; for example, the tall, shaggy papakhts are often associated with the Caucasus region, particularly Chechnya and Dagestan.

Beyond mere headwear, papakhts can hold symbolic significance. They can be presented as gifts of honor, and in some cultures, losing one's papakht can be seen as a great dishonor. The quality and style of a papakht can also reflect the wealth and social standing of the wearer.

In some regions, papakhts are worn year-round, providing warmth in winter and protection from the sun in summer. Although their popularity has waned in modern times, they continue to be worn by many, especially during traditional festivals and ceremonies, signifying a connection to cultural heritage.
