Pál Esterházy (1587–1645)

Pál Esterházy (born 1587, died 1645) was a Hungarian nobleman and founder of the Fraknó (Forchtenstein) branch of the Esterházy family. He held the title of Baron and later Count.

Pál Esterházy played a significant role in consolidating the family's wealth and power, particularly in Western Hungary (present-day Austria and Hungary). He acquired extensive lands and holdings, laying the groundwork for the Esterházy family's subsequent prominence and influence within the Habsburg Empire.

He converted to Catholicism in 1604, a strategically important decision that aligned the family with the ruling Habsburg dynasty and facilitated their rise in the imperial court. This conversion was a turning point for the family, leading to enhanced privileges and opportunities.

Pál Esterházy was married to Zsófia Illésházy. Their descendants continued to expand the family's influence and territories, solidifying the Esterházy name as one of the most important aristocratic families in Central Europe. His legacy lies in his role as a founder of a major branch of the Esterházy family and his contribution to their economic and political ascent.
