Owen Williams (Owen Gwyrfai)

Owen Williams (1790 – 1874), also known by his bardic name Owen Gwyrfai, was a prominent Welsh quarryman, poet, and local historian. Born in Waunfawr, near Caernarfon, North Wales, he spent most of his life working in the slate quarries of the region, becoming a respected figure within the quarrying community.

Gwyrfai's contributions to Welsh culture lie primarily in his literary work. He was a prolific writer of poetry and prose, focusing largely on local history, folklore, and the lives of working people in Gwynedd. His writings provide valuable insight into the social and economic conditions of 19th-century Wales, particularly the challenges and triumphs of the quarrying workforce. He participated actively in eisteddfodau, winning prizes for his compositions.

While not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, Owen Gwyrfai's work is recognized as an important record of the lives and traditions of the people of North Wales during a period of significant social and industrial change. His writings continue to be studied and appreciated for their historical and literary value.
