Battle of Najaf (2003)

The Battle of Najaf (2003) refers to a series of engagements that took place in the Iraqi city of Najaf during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Najaf, a major religious center for Shia Muslims, was a key objective for Coalition forces moving north towards Baghdad. The main combatants were U.S. forces, primarily elements of the 101st Airborne Division, and Iraqi forces, including Fedayeen Saddam militia and elements of the Iraqi Army.

The battle was characterized by intermittent skirmishes, ambushes, and attempts by Iraqi forces to disrupt the Coalition advance. U.S. forces employed air support and armor to overcome Iraqi resistance. The fighting involved house-to-house combat and street battles, especially in and around the city's Old City and the Imam Ali Mosque, one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam.

The battle lasted several days, culminating in the establishment of U.S. control over Najaf. The capture of Najaf secured a vital supply route for Coalition forces and weakened Iraqi resistance in the region. While the fighting was intense, efforts were made to minimize damage to the Imam Ali Mosque due to its religious significance. After the battle, U.S. forces worked with local Shia leaders to establish security and begin the process of rebuilding the city's infrastructure and establishing a new local government.
