Sidney Clarke (priest)

Sidney Clarke (1831-1912) was an Anglican priest and hymn writer. He was born in Jamaica and educated at the University of Durham, earning a BA in 1854. He was ordained as a deacon in 1854 and as a priest in 1855.

Clarke served as a curate in several parishes before becoming Vicar of Bredwardine with Brobury in Herefordshire in 1866, a position he held until his retirement in 1904. He was also a Prebendary of Hereford Cathedral.

Clarke is best known for his hymns, many of which were included in Hymns Ancient and Modern. Notable examples include "O Holy Saviour, Friend unseen" and "Thine arm, O Lord, in days of old." His hymns are characterized by their devotional language and their focus on themes of comfort, healing, and reliance on God.

He died in 1912 and is remembered for his contribution to hymnody and his long service to the Church of England.
