Marmaduke Dixon (settler)
Marmaduke Dixon was an early settler in the British Colony of Maryland. He is primarily known for his role as a surveyor and mathematician involved in the initial surveying and demarcation of the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania. Alongside Jeremiah Mason, he was contracted to extend the line westward from the point previously established by others. This survey work, beginning in the 1760s, contributed to the eventual delineation of the Mason-Dixon Line, though his involvement precedes the widely known stage where the line became a symbol of division between free and slave states. His contributions are significant in understanding the early history of land division and boundary establishment in colonial America. Further biographical details beyond his involvement in the survey are scarce.
