Catherine Wheel (band)
Catherine Wheel were an English alternative rock band formed in 1990 in Great Yarmouth. The band consisted of Rob Dickinson (vocals/guitar), Brian Futter (guitar), Dave Hawes (bass), and Neil Sims (drums).
Known for their blend of shoegaze aesthetics with heavier, grunge-influenced rock, Catherine Wheel emerged during a period where alternative music was rapidly evolving. Their early sound was characterized by swirling guitars, heavily distorted effects, and Dickinson's distinctive vocals.
The band released their debut album, Ferment, in 1992 to critical acclaim. The album's success helped establish them as a significant force in the burgeoning alternative scene. Subsequent albums included Chrome (1993), which saw a shift towards a more streamlined and aggressive sound, and Happy Days (1995), an even heavier and more aggressive album.
As the 1990s progressed, Catherine Wheel continued to evolve their sound. Adam and Eve (1997) displayed a more melodic and polished approach, while their final studio album, Wishville (2000), saw them experimenting with electronic elements.
Catherine Wheel disbanded in 2000. Rob Dickinson pursued a solo career, releasing albums and contributing to film soundtracks. In 2024, the original lineup reunited for select shows, marking a return to the stage after a long hiatus.
