Ofoto (scanner software)

Ofoto was an early and influential consumer-oriented scanner software package, originally developed by Light Source Computer Images, Inc. and later acquired by Eastman Kodak in 1998. It was particularly known for its ease of use and sophisticated image processing capabilities, making high-quality scans accessible to a broader audience than earlier, more technical scanner software options.

Ofoto aimed to simplify the scanning process by offering features like automatic image cropping, rotation, and color correction. It guided users through the steps necessary to produce optimized digital images from physical documents and photographs. The software supported a wide range of scanners from different manufacturers, abstracting away much of the technical complexity of dealing with individual scanner drivers and settings.

A key innovation of Ofoto was its use of adaptive algorithms to automatically adjust scan settings based on the content of the image being scanned. This helped to improve the quality of scans and reduce the need for manual adjustments. The software also included tools for removing dust and scratches, further enhancing the final image.

While no longer actively developed or supported, Ofoto played a significant role in popularizing digital scanning and shaping the development of subsequent scanner software. Its focus on ease of use and intelligent automation influenced the design of many later applications. It remains a notable example of software that helped bridge the gap between analog and digital photography.
