Odd Thomas (novel)
Odd Thomas is a 2003 thriller novel by American author Dean Koontz. It is the first book in the Odd Thomas series, which currently comprises eight novels, three novellas, and a graphic novel adaptation. The story follows Odd Thomas, a young man living in the fictional town of Pico Mundo, California, who possesses the ability to see the dead and is often compelled to help them resolve unfinished business or prevent impending disasters.
The novel centers on Odd's efforts to prevent a large-scale catastrophe he foresees through his ability to see "bodachs," shadowy creatures that gather where violent deaths are likely to occur. He encounters a man with a connection to the looming danger and, aided by his girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn and other allies, works to unravel the mystery before it's too late.
Odd Thomas explores themes of fate, free will, good versus evil, and the responsibility that comes with extraordinary abilities. The novel is characterized by its blend of suspense, humor, and philosophical musings, which are trademarks of Koontz's writing style. The book was adapted into a film of the same name in 2013.
