Nightwatchman (cricket)

In cricket, a nightwatchman is a lower-order batsman sent in to bat higher up the order than usual towards the end of a day's play. The primary role of a nightwatchman is to protect more valuable batsmen from having to face the remaining overs of the day, particularly if the light is deteriorating or the bowling is especially challenging. The expectation is not that the nightwatchman will score a large number of runs, but rather that they will see out the remaining overs, preserving wickets and allowing a recognized batsman to start the following day's play.

The tactic is often employed when a team has lost a wicket late in the day, usually within the last few overs, and has a number of established batsmen still to come. Rather than risk a key batsman being dismissed in difficult conditions, the captain will send in a nightwatchman. This player typically possesses reasonable defensive capabilities but is not known for their batting prowess.

The success of a nightwatchman is often measured by their ability to survive until the close of play. Occasionally, a nightwatchman will unexpectedly score a significant number of runs, disrupting the opposition's plans. However, this is considered a bonus rather than the main objective of the tactic. The use of a nightwatchman is a strategic decision aimed at maximizing batting resources and minimizing risk.
