Haig (whisky)
Haig is a brand of Scotch whisky, with a history tracing back to the 17th century. The Haig family is one of the oldest and most influential families in the Scotch whisky industry. Robert Haig, born in 1598, is recorded as distilling whisky as early as 1627, making him a key figure in the early development of the industry.
The family's distilling operations were further formalized with the establishment of the Kennetpans distillery in 1720, considered to be one of Scotland's oldest commercial distilleries. John Haig, a descendant of Robert, established the Cameronbridge distillery in 1824. Cameronbridge became known for its grain whisky production, a crucial component of blended Scotch whiskies.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Haig whisky became a globally recognized brand. It played a significant role in the rise of blended Scotch, being marketed extensively in Britain and its colonies. Haig's iconic dimpled bottle, first introduced in the late 19th century, became a distinctive feature.
Over the years, ownership of the Haig brand has changed hands. Today, it is owned by Diageo, a global leader in alcoholic beverages. Diageo continues to produce and market Haig whisky, with offerings that include Haig Club, a single grain Scotch whisky promoted in partnership with David Beckham. Haig Club aims to modernize the brand and appeal to a wider audience.
Haig whisky is characterized by its history and association with the development of both grain and blended Scotch whisky. While it has evolved over time, it remains an important name in the Scotch whisky industry.
