Nea Makri
Nea Makri (Greek: Νέα Μάκρη) is a coastal town in East Attica, Greece. It is located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of Athens, on the Aegean coast, facing the island of Euboea. Administratively, it belongs to the municipality of Marathon.
Nea Makri is known for its beaches, its proximity to Athens, and its connection to the ancient site of Marathon. The area has experienced significant development in recent decades, transforming from a primarily agricultural area into a popular residential and tourist destination.
The town's name, "Nea Makri," translates to "New Makri," indicating its origins as a relocation from a nearby older settlement called Makri. The older settlement's name likely derives from the Greek word "makris" (μακρύς), meaning "long."
Nea Makri offers a variety of amenities, including restaurants, cafes, shops, and hotels, catering to both residents and tourists. The port of Nea Makri provides ferry connections to various islands in the Aegean Sea, particularly Euboea.
