NSB Di 6

The NSB Di 6 was a class of diesel-electric locomotives operated by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB). Introduced in the 1950s, these locomotives were primarily used for both passenger and freight services on various lines throughout Norway. The Di 6 was designed and built by Nohab, a Swedish company, and based on the successful American EMD (Electro-Motive Division) design.

The locomotives were characterized by their distinctive appearance and robust construction, well-suited to the challenging Norwegian climate and terrain. They represented a significant modernization of the NSB's locomotive fleet, replacing older steam locomotives on many routes.

The Di 6 class had a relatively short service life compared to other locomotive classes. This was largely due to the electrification of significant portions of the Norwegian railway network, which reduced the need for diesel locomotives on main lines. Consequently, the Di 6 locomotives were gradually withdrawn from service, with the last units being retired in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Several Di 6 locomotives have been preserved and can be seen at railway museums in Norway. They serve as a reminder of the transition from steam to diesel power on the Norwegian railways.
