NGC 6984

NGC 6984 is a spiral galaxy located approximately 205 million light-years away in the constellation Indus. It is classified as a SAB(rs)c galaxy, indicating that it's a weakly barred spiral galaxy with a prominent ring structure and loosely wound spiral arms.

The galaxy is notable for having hosted two observed Type Ia supernovae: SN 2009ek and SN 2013ek. The proximity of these two events in the same galaxy has made NGC 6984 an object of significant interest for astronomers studying the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae and the potential for recurring supernovae within the same host galaxy. The observation of two Type Ia supernovae allowed for comparison of the events and helped to refine models of supernova formation and evolution.

The galaxy's distance was measured using observations of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB). NGC 6984's spiral structure and relatively face-on orientation make it a suitable subject for studying the distribution of stars and gas within spiral arms. It is also part of a small group of galaxies.
