Diceros

Diceros is a genus of rhinoceros containing only one extant species, the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis). The name Diceros is derived from the Greek words "di-" meaning two, and "ceros" meaning horn, referring to the two horns characteristic of this rhinoceros species.

The black rhinoceros is native to eastern and southern Africa, including countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. They inhabit a variety of habitats, including grasslands, savannas, scrublands, and woodlands.

Black rhinoceroses are herbivores, browsing on leaves, twigs, and thorny bushes. They use their prehensile upper lip to grasp vegetation. They are typically solitary animals, except for mothers with their calves.

The black rhinoceros is critically endangered due to poaching for its horn, which is used in traditional medicine and as a status symbol. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and increase black rhinoceros populations. These efforts include anti-poaching patrols, habitat preservation, and translocation of rhinos to safer areas. Subspecies of the black rhinoceros have varying levels of endangerment, with some already extinct.
