N57 motorway (Netherlands)
The N57 is a major road in the Netherlands, primarily functioning as a non-motorway thoroughfare but featuring significant stretches designated as an autoweg (expressway), sometimes considered a motorway by some. It runs in a north-south direction through the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland. The road is crucial for connecting the region of Rotterdam with the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee, Schouwen-Duiveland, and eventually with the province of Zeeland via the Brouwersdam.
The N57 begins near Hellegatsplein, where it connects to the A59 motorway and other local roads. It then traverses Goeree-Overflakkee, passing through or near towns like Middelharnis and Ouddorp. A significant portion of this segment is an autoweg with grade-separated intersections.
Continuing south, the N57 crosses the Brouwersdam, a vital part of the Delta Works, a series of constructions designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding. The Brouwersdam also serves as a popular recreational area.
Upon reaching Schouwen-Duiveland, the N57 continues south towards Zierikzee, the island's largest town. The road continues through Schouwen-Duiveland, eventually terminating at the N59 near Serooskerke.
The N57 is a vital transport artery for both commuters and tourists, particularly during the summer months. Its role in connecting the islands of Zeeland with the mainland makes it a key component of the regional infrastructure network. The road experiences significant traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours and holiday periods. The route's designation as an autoweg in sections reflects its importance for regional connectivity and traffic flow, although its non-motorway status for its majority length results in a lower speed limit and frequent junctions. The road is maintained by Rijkswaterstaat, the executive arm of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
