N12 road (Ireland)
The N12 was a national primary road in Ireland. It connected the M1 motorway at junction 17, near Dundalk, County Louth to the border with Northern Ireland. Upon crossing the border, it continued as the A1 dual carriageway to Newry.
In 2008, as part of a larger reclassification of national roads, the N12 was reclassified as part of the N1. The stretch of road now forms part of the main Dublin to Belfast road route. Prior to the M1 motorway extension north of Dundalk, the N12 designation covered a slightly longer stretch of road, beginning further south near Dundalk. The reclassification was intended to simplify the route numbering system and eliminate short stretches of national primary roads that were considered redundant. Signage reflecting this change was implemented over subsequent years. The former N12 section is a dual carriageway for its entire length.
